Today from the top of As-Samra Mountain, at the very spot where the famously generous Hatim al-Tai once lit welcoming campfires, visitors can overlook the city of Ha'il. Near that same spot, the residents of Ha'il have installed a gas-powered fire that is lit each night to remind residents and visitors of their legacy of hospitality. Though Ha'il was once a well-known stop for camel caravans on route to the Hajj, a trade that went out of style with the advent of trains and air travel, now it is
known as the breadbasket of the Kingdom. Irrigation has turned the area to the northeast of the city into productive wheat fields and gardens of fruit and dates. Ha'il offers a taste of history with a traditional souk, two large fortresses, and the Ha'il Museum, as well as a taste of modernity with three large shopping malls, restaurants, and a car rally. The Ha'il Desert Life Festival is held each year as participants honor desert culture around the world. Visitors to the city still report receiving the hand of hospitality, just as they have for over a thousand years.
