Najran is one of the fastest growing cities in Saudi Arabia with the population increasing from less than 50,000 to over 500,000 in just 40 years. Its history goes back to Roman times when it was a multicultural city known for leather and weapons manufacturing. Due to its close proximity to Yemen, Najran has also historically been part of the Yemeni cloth industry with the original kiswah of the famous Ka'aba being produced and sewn in the city. from these time periods can be seen around town and in the Najran Museum. Though the area has a desert climate, an oasis and mountains break the monotony of the desert, and the temperatures are lower than other places in the country due to a higher elevation. Visitors to Najran will find all the enjoyments of a big city, including three football clubs, hospitals, a university, malls, and various entertainment venues. While the city holds on to its history, the continued growth in population ensures that the city continues to develop and modernize.
