Just one hour south of the bustling capital of Riyadh sits the quieter but still active city of Al-Kharj. Once a collection of villages that have recently merged to form a city, Al-Kharj is important in the area due to its geographical ability to collect rain runoff from the surrounding valleys and store it in deep pools. aurant. The abundance of water makes agriculture and livestock farming possible, and in 1938 the King founded the country's first dairy farm which still provides much of the Kingdom's milk today. In the spirit of the city's history of scientific experimentation and creation, the local university trains engineering students, and pilots from the Royal Saudi Air Force congregate at a nearby Air Force base, making the city a leader in industry, innovation, and commerce.
